Former Priest Serving Time For Stealing From Parishes Sentenced For Nude Video Of Minor

A former Roman Catholic priest already serving nearly 8 years for stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars from churches in Rapid City has been sentenced to another 5 years for an unrelated child exploitation case that occurred in Poland.

43-year old Marcin Garbacz, a native of Poland, was given credit for 479 days or about 16 months already served.

Garbacz pled guilty a year ago to engaging in illicit sexual conduct with a minor in a foreign place for incidents on a 2011 trip to Poland while assigned to a parish in Faith.

In his factual basis statement, Garbacz admitted that while on the trip with 2 women and a 17-year old boy, he used his cell phone to film the boy as he showered, then transferred the nude videos onto his computer.

In his earlier theft case, Garbacz was convicted on 65 counts of wire fraud, money laundering, transporting stolen money, and filing false tax returns between July 2012 and April 2018.

During closing arguments in that trial, the prosecutor calls the scope of the scheme “astounding” and the evidence “overwhelming.” Garbacz was ordered last year to pay the Rapid City Diocese nearly $260,000 restitution.
