Holiday Reminder: Drive Safely, Arrive Alive

Loading

During this busy holiday weekend, the South Dakota Highway Patrol emphasizes the importance of travel safety.

“We want to make sure everyone arrives at their destination safely this Memorial Day weekend.” South Dakota Highway Patrol Superintendent Col. Casey Collins stated. “Our state troopers will be highly visible and actively engaged in traffic enforcement and crash reduction efforts.”

The SD Highway Patrol offers these travel safety tips:

  • Slow down.
  • Always wear your seatbelt and ensure everyone in the vehicle does as well.
  • Drive sober.
  • Pay attention to your surroundings, avoid distractions.
  • Check road conditions at www.sd511.org or by calling 511.

This year’s Memorial Day crash reporting period starts at 6 p.m. Friday and ends at 11:59 p.m. Monday. During the 2023 Memorial Day holiday period, there were 254 reported traffic crashes, two fatalities and 77 injuries. Safety equipment such as seat belts and helmets are critical to saving lives whether a driver or a passenger.

“Reducing the number of fatal crashes on our highways is a top priority,” said Highway Safety Office director Robert Weinmeister. “Many of those fatalities involved drivers and passengers who were not wearing seatbelts. Alcohol and speeding continue to be major contributing factors in fatal crashes. Once again it is about making smart decisions that will keep you and others safe.”

Whether heading to a gathering, exploring our beautiful state, or returning home, please prioritize safe travel and enjoy a wonderful Memorial Day weekend.
