Lawrence “Larry” Michael Kubo, 78, of Windsor, Colorado, passed away on April 17, 2026.
Larry was born on April 13, 1948, in Denver, Colorado. He was adopted just a few days later by Lyle and Bernice (Schommer) Kubo, who raised him on their ranch in South Dakota. Life on the ranch shaped Larry from a young age. He grew up learning to ride, rope, and hunt, and it was there that he developed his deep love for horses and the western way of life.
Larry attended Assumption Academy Catholic School in Chadron, Nebraska. In his initial years at Assumption, he resided on campus during the weekdays until his family sold their ranch in 1962 and relocated to Chadron. Larry graduated from Assumption Academy in 1966, then attended Chadron State College for two years.
While attending college, Larry met the love of his life, Cheryl Huckfeldt. They were married on August 24, 1968, and soon after began their family, welcoming their daughter Dawn Michelle in 1969.
In 1971, Larry opened Larry’s Bar in Hay Springs, Nebraska. The establishment was more than a typical bar—it also served as a saddlery, offering a variety of tack and saddles. In 1975, Larry and Cheryl sold the business and moved to Colorado to begin their next venture, purchasing the Corner Liquor Store in Windsor, Colorado. During this time, they welcomed their daughter Amanda Sue in 1977. They owned and operated the store until 1979.
Over the years, Larry worked breaking horses, driving a semi, and buying cars before beginning a long and successful career selling veterinary pharmaceuticals in 1985. He traveled extensively, serving ranchers across Colorado, Wyoming, Nebraska and South Dakota; a role that perfectly matched his deep respect for the agricultural and ranching community. Larry continued this work until his retirement in 2024.
Larry especially enjoyed team roping and was an avid collector of bits and spurs, passions that reflected his deep appreciation for horses and the western lifestyle he loved so much. Larry never met a stranger; he was quick to make friends and learn all he could about their story. Larry had a special way of helping others, often using his knowledge and connections to track down saddles, vehicles, or other necessities. His generosity and willingness to help were just another reflection of his kindness.
Larry was a devoted husband and father whose greatest pride was his family. He loved attending his daughters’ sporting events and was always their biggest fan. He was known for his great sense of humor and rarely missed an opportunity to share a joke or tell a story.
Larry is survived by his wife of 57 years, Cheryl Kubo; daughters Dawn Kubo of Scottsbluff, Nebraska, Mandy (Skip) Chubb of Eaton, Colorado, and Cindy (Steve) Simmons of Minneapolis, Minnesota; grandchildren Derek Ray (Cassidy) of Scottsbluff, Nebraska, Danea Ray of Lincoln, Nebraska, and Cody Ray of Lincoln, Nebraska; and great granddaughter Jubilee Ray. Honorary granddaughter, Jordan Geiger, who was like a granddaughter to Larry.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Lyle and Bernice Kubo, and his sister, Mary Louise Kubo-Baker.
A celebration of Larry’s life will be held Saturday May 23, 2026, at 11am at Foundations Church 1159 Main Street, Windsor, Colorado 80550. Family and friends will gather to honor his memory, share stories, and celebrate a life well lived.
