Funeral services for 67-year old Maria Whirlwind Horse are Friday, November 19, 2021 at noon at St John’s Catholic Church in Allen, SD, with Father Ron Seminara, S.J., officiating and traditional Lakota services by Mr Lawrence “Bear” Cross
Cremation will follow the funeral with burial at a later date.
A one-night wake starts Thursday, November 18, at noon, also at St John’s Catholic Church
Maria Mae Whirlwind Horse “Canté Wasté Winyan” was born on May 14, 1966 in Pine Ridge, SD to Raymond Whirlwind Horse, Sr. and Pearl Margaret (Richards) Whirlwind Horse. Maria made her journey to the Spirit World on November 10, 2021 in Alliance, NE.
Maria is survived by her daughters; Marissa Whirlwind Horse of Alliance, NE, Larissa Whirlwind Horse of Scottsbluff, NE; siblings, Verna Sanchez of North Platte, NE, John Whirlwind Horse of Allen, SD, Devona Lone Wolf of Martin, SD, Mike Whirlwind Horse of Alliance, NE, Cheryl Hudelson of Hannibal, MO, and Marjorie Sanchez of Alliance, NE; special grandkids, Rayna Whirlwind Horse and Zander Whirlwind Horse, both of Alliance, NE, Jolissa Catches of Scottsbluff, NE, Taliyah Whirlwind Horse of Scottsbluff, NE, and Shane Red Bear of Alliance, NE; uncle, Russell Whirlwind Horse; 38 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Maria was preceded in death by her parents, Raymond Whirlwind Horse, Sr. & Pearl (Richards) Whirlwind Horse; sisters, Pauline Whirlwind Horse, Susann Red Bear, MaryJane Red Bear, and Verbena Red Bear; brothers, Moses Red Bear, Raymond Whirlwind Horse, Jr., and Paul Whirlwind Horse; and nephew, Moses Red Bear.
Pallbearers will be Ryan Whirlwind Horse, Jeffery “Diamond” Whirlwind Horse, Shane Red Bear, Ramiro Harp, Kameron Jordan, Kody Jordan, Leoni Yellow Hawk and Darren Red Bear.
Honorary Pallbearers will be All Friends & Relatives.
