The Nebraska Department of Transportation is strongly discouraging ALL travel tonight in western Nebraska and says don’t travel unless it’s an absolute emergency.
Strong winds are combining with fresh fallen snow and snow remaining from last week’s blizzard to create whiteout conditions while wind chills are 30-to-50 degrees below zero. Conditions will only get colder and more dangerous as the night deepens.
Several Panhandle highways are closed and will remain closed at least through the morning because plows will NOT be working overnight as conditions are too dangerous and cold.
As of 7:15pm, the following highways are CLOSED:
In Nebraska:
- Hwy 19 – Sidney to CO State Line
- Hwy 20 – Chadron to Valentine
- Hwy 26 – Lewellen to Ogallala
- Hwy 27 – Hwy 2 to SD State Line
- Hwy 71 – Scottsbluff to Kimball
- Hwy 87 – Rushville to SD State Line
- Hwy 250 – Rushville to Hwy 2
- Hwy 385 – SD State Line to Hwy 20 west of Chadron
In Wyoming:
- Hwy 85 – Cheyenne to Torrington
- Hwy 85 – Lingle to Lusk
