Earth Day Leads Into Chadron Community Cleanup

Today is Earth Day, an annual event held on April 22 for the past 52 years to demonstrate support for protection of the earth and the environment.

Begun in the United States, it now includes events in more than 193 countries around the world involving a billion or so people.

With Arbor Day never more than 8 days later, many communities hold joint events for both. Chadron is one of those with an Earth Day-Arbor Day tree planting this morning at 10:00 in Memorial Park.

The tree is being planted in memory of retired longtime Chadron State College and Fort Robinson Post Playhouse theater director Roger Mays, husband of local horticulturist Lucinda Mays. Roger passed away unexpectedly March 5th.

Keep Chadron Beautiful is unofficially marking Earth Day tomorrow with its annual Chadron Community Cleanup. Executive Director Susan Hucke says volunteers will be out regardless of wind or weather.

This year’s theme is Don’t Pop My Bubble.

Hucke says it’s important that everyone planning to help with the cleanup register, either at the courthouse or by sending an email to Keep Chadron Beautiful because the organization gets to use volunteer hours as an in-kind match for grants.
