In a press release this week, Nebraska Public Power District (NPPD) gave a detailed conclusion regarding the final results on a site feasibility study for Nebraska’s next generation nuclear facility.
The findings detail the second and final phase of a study project involving 16 Nebraska communities – including Rushville and Valentine. After careful deliberation and evaluation, four sites have been selected as the final candidates for the location: Norfolk, Sutherland, Beatrice, and Brownville, which is already home to Nebraska’s only nuclear power generator and also operated by NPPD.
“During the second phase, our team was able to work with the sixteen communities who allowed us to come talk with the public about both this siting study and nuclear technology as a whole,” said NPPD President and CEO Tom Kent. “Those conversations were positive across the state and are extremely valuable as we highlight the tremendous benefits nuclear power can provide to both a local community and the customers we serve.”
The siting feasibility study was conducted at the direction of the Nebraska Legislature, who allocated $1 million to the Nebraska Department of Economic Development to fund the study.
According to CEO Tom Kent, NPPD and all members of the Great Plains New Nuclear Consortium will utilize the data collected for the remaining evaluation process amongst the four remaining sites. No timeline on the final announcement has been released.
