On the opening day of softball for Chadron State College, the Eagles dropped two games. Against defending national champ West Texas A&M, CSC stood up to the title-holding Buffs but lost 3-0. In the later game, the Eagles faced tournament host Lubbock Christian and took a 6-1 loss to the perennial power Chaps.

In the first game, West Texas scored two of its three runs in the first inning. It took just one base hit and an error, plus a stolen base, and the Buffs scored on a pair of groundouts. WTAMU’s Diana Murtha later hit a solo home for her team’s last run.

Despite taking the loss, CSC’s starting pitcher Tia Kohl allowed only four base hits and two earned runs in six innings. She struck out three and walked none.

Junior transfer right fielder Chloe Brown tripled in the fifth inning of the LCU game, setting herself up to score the only run of the day for the Eagles, and the first of the season. Shortstop Addison Spears, batting next, scored her on a sacrifice fly.

Meanwhile Lubbock scored two runs in the second inning, one in the third, one in the fifth, and two in the sixth, to put across six runs.

Brooke Makemson, the Chaps senior shortstop, scored on a solo homer in the fifth and also hit a two-RBI single in the sixth to lead Lubbock with three RBI.

CSC freshman designated player Lauren Zimmerman was the Eagles’ leading batter on Friday, hitting 2-for-5. Both base hits came against Lubbock Christian.

CSC continues with Nebraska-Kearney at 3 p.m. tomorrow at the local Lubbock Christian High School, and then returns to Plainscapital Part at Lubbock Christian University to meet up with Eastern New Mexico in the evening.
