The Sturgis Police Department along with the South Dakota Highway Patrol are investigating a police pursuit turned fatal after a report of a stolen vehicle on Tuesday.
The Sturgis Police Department said in a release that just after 10:30am Tuesday officers received a report of a stolen vehicle. Officers responded to the location and located the vehicle. As officers attempted to make contact with the suspects vehicle, the suspect fled at a high rate of speed.
Officers pursued the vehicle, a newer Ford F-250 as it drove at speeds estimated at over 70 miles per hour before the Ford F-250 collided with a white Honda Accord.
Both drivers were trapped in their vehicles and required extradition. The driver of the stolen truck was transported by LifeFlight in critical condition. The unnamed driver of the Honda Accord sustained fatal injuries as a result of the crash.
The release said that due to the severity of the accident the South Dakota Highway Patrol has been requested to investigate the crash while the Sturgis Police Department is conducting a criminal investigation involving the driver of the stolen vehicle.
Criminal charges are pending and the incident remains under investigation.
