Severe thunderstorms moved through central and eastern Nebraska over the weekend.
In Kearney Saturday night’s storm knocked down 16 high-power voltage power lines, prompting police to warn residents in an area near 39th Street east of the Buffalo County Fairgrounds to avoid that area. Police say the area was shut down around eight Saturday night while city and Nebraska Public Power District crews worked to handle the downed power lines. One power pole fell onto a nearby home, police called it an extremely dangerous area but said no injuries have been reported.
Other areas affected by Saturday’s storms included Fairbury and Endicott reporting power outages, tree and building damage and Saline County with water reported over parts of Highway 15.
On Sunday it was tornadoes that did the damage. According to the Howard County Emergency Management two rural homes suffered heavy damage from a tornado that moved through the area early in the evening. No reports of injuries but at least one couple was trapped in their basement by debris. The homes were north of St. Libory.
Another tornado was reported in Hebron, No damage or injury reports have come from there. It was sixty years ago last week when Hebron was leveled by a tornado. That tornado killed five people and injured 82.
Other severe storms hit across the east part of the state on Sunday. Including the Omaha area.
More severe weather is forecast for the southeastern part of Nebraska Monday.
