Today is St Patrick’s Day, full of traditions such as wearing green to avoid getting pinched
. The Chadron Rotary Club began a new tradition last year, the Sneaky Leprechaun 5k Run/Walk.
Club spokesman Ben O’Watson, possibly touched with a bit of good Irish blarney, says the run is based on stories he often heard while growing up in Chadron.
Ben says the Sneaky Leprechaun course is 5-kilometers or about 3.1-miles over unpaved trails at Chadron State College, starting by the CSC softball field parking lot.
The trails – and race – are dog-friendly but strollers for kids need to be of off-road quality – especially given conditions after yesterday’s weather.
O’Watson says the Rotary Club and The Bean Broker encourage participants to dress in costume, have fun, and keep an eye out for the leprechaun’s treasure.
There is a $20 entry fee, but includes a gathering afterward with food and drink at the Bean Broker at 2nd and Chadron Avenue.
Advance registration is not required. Those who haven’t can get signed up starting at 4:45 at the CSC softball field parking lot with the Sneaky Leprechaun run taking off at 5:30.
