Chadron State College golfers unofficially finished Sunday tied for seventh, out of 12 teams, in the first of three rounds at the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championships. This year’s championship meet is at Whirlwind Golf Club in Chandler, Arizona, near Phoenix.
The meet was suspended for lack of daylight, while two teams, currently slotted 10th and 11th in the standings, had one hole to play. They will finish their rounds at 9:30 MT on Monday.
The CSC team played one of its better rounds of the season, chalking a 320, with none of its five entrants getting out of the low 80s. Four of five CSC golfers scored at least one birdie.
Chadron State finished the day eight strokes behind fourth-place Regis University, and 11 behind third place MSU Denver. Colorado Christian University led at 299, with the University of Colorado Colorado Springs close behind at an even 300 strokes.
Tying the Eagles at seventh was defending champion Westminster University, of Salt Lake City.
Junior Jordan Grasis led the Eagles in the first round with a mark of 77 strokes. She tied for third in par five scoring, at one-under-par, and also tied for No. 3 with three birdies, en route to a tie for 16th individually out of 59 golfers.
The other four CSC golfers were bunched closely together at the end of the day. Junior Alpine Hickstein shot an 80, and sophomores Brooke Kramer, Kenzey Kanno, and Kinsey Smith went 81, 82, and 83, respectively.
Isabel Botero of MSU Denver was in first individually after the first 18 holes, firing a 70.
Tee times will be posted Monday morning once the two remaining teams finish round one.
