Student Group-Sponsored “Kid Friendly” Drag Show At SDSU Blasted By Conservatives

Loading

A number of state lawmakers and conservative activists say a drag show tonight (Wednesday) at South Dakota State University that was advertised as “kid friendly” should not be able to move forward, but school officials say it’s out of their hands.

SDSU President Barry Dunn says the university is not sponsoring the drag show, the Gender and Sexualities Alliance student organization is and that under state law registered student organizations are free to sponsor lawful events on campus.

President Dunn apologizes for the “miscommunication” and emphasizes that the show is not supported by university funds.

Dunn’s statement did not quell conservative opposition as a number of Republican lawmakers took to social media to criticize South Dakota State for allowing the event to take place on its campus.

Republican State Representative Chris Karr of Sioux Falls, chair of the House Appropriations committee, wrote a letter on the issue to Dunn and South Dakota Board of Regents Executive Director Brian Maher.

Karr pushed them to take action in the short and long term to prevent kids from attending tonight’s event, and ones like it in the future.

    • Shocked by comparing apples to oranges? This is not a “freedom of speech” issue. If a grown man thinks dressing like a female prostitute and gyrating suggestively in front of grade-school children is normal, this person needs psychiatric help. Shame on the parents that would even consider subjecting their young impressionable children to such garbage.

      • If you think an all ages drag show includes dressing like a female prostitute and gyrating suggestively in front of grade-school children, you need psychiatric help.
