A Texas motorcyclist has died of injuries suffered in a 3-vehicle accident a week earlier in the Black Hills.
The South Dakota Highway Patrol says 66-year-old Gary Holcombe of the Houston suburb of Katy passed away July 20 at Monument Health Hospital Rapid City.
Holcombe had been riding alone westbound on Interstate 90 near Summerset on Thursday, July 14, when he slowed down to avoid hitting a large box that had fallen from a pickup ahead of him.
Holcombe was then rear-ended by another pickup and thrown from his bike. He was not wearing a helmet and landed in the north ditch of the freeway. He was airlifted to the hospital and remained there until his death.
The drivers of the pickups were uninjured and both face pending charges in connection with the accident.
