Funeral services for 81-year old Thelma Mesteth are  Monday, May 23, 2022 at 1:00 at the T&T Center in Wanblee, SD, with Lay Ministers Johnny Wilson and Anthony Wounded Head and Senior Catechist Ben Conquering Bear officiating and traditional Lakota services by Chris Brooks

Burial is at Gethsemane Episcopal Cemetery in Wanblee

A two-night wake service begins Sat, May 21, with the first night starting at 2:00 at the Pine Ridge Elementary School Gymnasium in Pine Ridge, SD. The second night starts Sunday at 2:00 at the T&T Center in Wanblee.

Thelma Lottie Mesteth “Wacipi Wicahpi Win” ~ Dancing Star Woman ~ was born on July 23, 1940, at home in the Yellow Hawk Homestead, Washabaugh County, to Jacob Yellow Hawk and Emma (Broken Leg) Yellow Hawk. Thelma made her journey to the Spirit World on May 13, 2022, surrounded by her loving family at home in Pine Ridge, SD.

Thelma is survived by her children, Roger (Kathleen) Mesteth of Grand Forks, ND, James Mesteth, Joe (Veronica) Mesteth, Jen (Rob, Sr.) Mesteth, and Jill Mesteth, all of Pine Ridge, SD, and Julie Marshall of Shiprock, NM; siblings, Duane (Linda) Yellow Hawk, Geraldine (Johnny) Wilson, and Doris Goings; grandchildren, Jamie, Russell, Robert, Rafe, Riley, Rogan, Joe Jr., Jeffrey, Samantha, Stephanie, Martina, Bryce, and Eric Mesteth, Frederika Blacksmith, Robert Jr., Beau, Aubry and Richard (Danielle) Two Two; and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and great-grandchildren.

Thelma was preceded in death by her parents, Jacob and Emma Yellow Hawk; the love of her life – her husband, Fredrick Mesteth, Jr.; sons, Fredrick Mesteth III and Andrew Running Hawk, Jr.; siblings, William, Tommy, Collins, Laverne, Orville, Myrtle and Betty Yellow Hawk; grandchildren, Alanie Marie Mesteth and Jordin Marshall; and great-grandchild, Javon Blacksmith.

Pallbearers will be Melvin “Smiley” Sierra, Dave Michaud, Felix Rodriguez, Dan Rodriguez, Will Ponds, Corwin Good Crow, Dale Pine, Richard Greenwald and Darrell “Brownie” Eagle Bull.

Honorary pallbearers will be All Hunka daughters & Hunka sons (you know who you are), Broken Leg Family, Sicangu Family, Wanblee Family, Pine Ridge Family, Stillwater Hospice Staff, IHS Nursing Staff, and All Friends & Relatives.

From the Family; We ask everyone to come together with love in their hearts and send our mom home in a good way. She loved you all and she will be greatly missed.
