Warriors End Year In Post-Season

Loading

Sioux County’s fall sports seasons ended last week as both the football and volleyball team suffered post-season losses.

On the gridiron, the Warriors faced undefeated Pawnee City in the first round of playoffs Friday night and fell 55-22. Pawnee City went up 25-0 in the first quarter as Sioux County struggled to make it past mid-field on their offensive possessions. As the clock ran out, Sioux County’s Cy Hughson recovered a Pawnee City fumble at the goal line to prevent another touchdown; the first series in the quarter in which Pawnee City did not score.

The Warriors were unable to capitalize on the fumble, however, but on Pawnee City’s next possession, Shane Gluth came up with a big sack on fourth and 20 and the Warriors were able to cross mid-field for the first time. Sioux County still couldn’t make it to the goal line, and Pawnee City answered with another touchdown to make it 31-0. As the clock ran out on the half, the Warriors came up with an interception by Logan Monroe, putting themselves in position to score, but went into the locker room still trailing 31-0.

Pawnee City struck quickly out of the break, going up 39-0 within 35 seconds in the third quarter. The Warriors got on the scoreboard the first time after Gluth caught a pass to put them just outside the endzone. Hughson ran in for the touchdown for Sioux County, but Pawnee City answered two minutes later to make it 47-8. Pawnee City went on to score a final touchdown in the fourth quarter, while Sioux County added two more, one on a kick return by Jack Hunter and another rushing TD by Baxter Reece.

The Warriors end the year at 5-4.

The Lady Warriors entered sub-district action last week facing Cody-Kilgore. Sioux County had defeated the Cowgirls earlier this year but fell in four sets in the post-season tournament. Cody-Kilgore took the first two sets 25-21, 25-17, but Sioux County came back to force extra points and win the third 27-25. The Cowgirls triumphed in the fourth 25-21 to move on to the finals.

Sierra Eastman led the Warriors with 10 kills on the night and earned a double-double with 33 digs, also a team high. Several other players also were in double digits for digs, with Britney Klein picking up 21, and Ella Hyer and Victoria Turbiville digging 18 balls each. Klein also had 19 assists.

The Warriors, who played much of the season with just six members, finish the year at 10-11.
