Scotts Bluff National Monument has been forced to cancel the special Backcountry Tour scheduled for tomorrow and replace it with an after-hours hike to the summit.
The hike is free, but reservations are required.
Ranger Matt Salomon says the tour was canceled because the canal road used to access the backcountry area of the monument suffered multiple washouts from recent heavy rains that haven’t been repaired yet.
Ranger Salomon says the Summit hike will start at the visitor center tomorrow night at 7:00 and will end around 8:00.
Along the way, Salomon will showcase the work done at the Monument by 2 major Great Depression programs – the CWA or Civil Works Administration and the CCC – Civilian Conservation Corps.
He will also talk about the geology and paleontology of Scotts Bluff, an important landmark on the Emigrant Trails.
To reserve a spot on the tour, call the Scotts Bluff National Monument visitor center at 308-436-9700. More information about the park is available online at nps.gov/scbl or on Facebook.
