Wayne Mitchell Iteska (Whiteface) was born in Deadwood, SD to Frederick Philip Whiteface and Margaret “Pearl” (Brewer) Whiteface on September 25, 1948.

He made his journey to the Spirit World on May 8, 2021.  He arrived there as a surprise gift to our mother on Mother’s Day and an unexpected gift to our Dad on his birthday which was also May 9.

He was a gift from the beginning of his life.  He was the only son and had five sisters: Charmaine, Germaine, Lorraine, Elaine and Dalaine.

Wayne was an accomplished musician and started in his music career when he was sixteen years old playing with his cousins in their living room and then forming a band called the Kinsman.  He loved playing with his cousins and they played for many local dances and became quite in demand.  He and his cousins and friends played music and formed other bands and played for many dances throughout the Pine Ridge Reservation.  Wayne loved the Beatles and became very accomplished on the guitar playing Beatles music.  His Dad Fred Whiteface,  was also an accomplished musician, formed a band with Wayne and two of his sisters. They played throughout the region in local night clubs, local dances, proms and for social gatherings.

Wayne attended Black Hills State University and received a Bachelor’s Degree with a double major in Psychology and English and a Minor in Music.  He then went on to receive a Master’s Degree in Library Science from the University of South Dakota in Vermillion.  This was not the end of his academic career.  He went on to receive a Law degree from Antioch School of Law in Washington DC.

Wayne was multi-talented, and his education allowed him to work and be of benefit to many organizations including the Department of Energy in Washington DC, the University of Arizona Law Library, and he also served in many tribal positions and worked with many tribal programs.  He also spent many years working together with his wife Deborah who also was a lawyer.

Wayne was an avid reader, with history as his favorite but he was also well read in many, many more areas and could hold an intelligent, spirited conversation on a myriad of subjects.

He was married to Deborah DuBray on 5-5-5 at 5:00 (May 5, 2005 @5:00pm.) Debbi was the love of his life.  He is survived by his wife Deborah, six grown children: Eric, Ben, Lara, Skye, Joe, & Zane.  His sisters, Germaine Little Bear, Elaine (Roger) LaMere, Dalaine (Stephen) Bloom, and Charmaine White Face, grandchildren, numerous nieces, cousins, friends. He was preceded in death by his parents Frederick and Pearl Whiteface, his sister Lorraine.

Pallbearers will be Eric DuBray, Ben DuBray, Henry Sevier, Jon Cunningham, Rich Hughes, Randy Hughes, Stephen Bloom, and Jerry Wright.
