In an effort to combat sexual violence and support Sexual Assault Awareness Month, the Board of Trustees of the Nebraska State Colleges has officially designated April 24, 2024, as Denim Day across Chadron State, Peru State, and Wayne State Colleges. This resolution, passed unanimously, aims to dispute myths surrounding sexual assault and the detrimental effects of victim blaming.
Denim Day originated from a controversial 1998 Italian Supreme Court decision, where a rape conviction was overturned based on the victim’s attire, suggesting that her tight jeans implied consent. This ruling sparked global outrage and prompted the inception of Denim Day as an annual event to emphasize that clothing never implies consent to sexual acts.
The resolution highlights planned activities at all three colleges to engage and educate the college community:
- Chadron State College will host a Denim Day event encouraging students and staff to wear denim. A photo booth will be set up in the student center where participants can sign a pledge supporting survivors and denouncing sexual violence.
- Peru State College calls on all faculty, staff, and students to wear jeans to assert that one’s clothing does not invite sexual violence.
- Wayne State College will engage its community in Denim Day to promote awareness and challenge the myths associated with sexual violence.
“By recognizing Denim Day, we are taking a clear stand against the misconceptions that often surround cases of sexual assault,” said John Chaney, Chair of the Board of Trustees of the Nebraska State Colleges. “Our Colleges are committed to creating a safe environment that respects the dignity of all individuals.”
The resolution further reinforces the Nebraska State College System’s policy against discrimination based on sex and its ongoing commitment to an environment free from sexual harassment and discrimination.
A copy of this resolution will be permanently recorded in the minutes of the Board of Trustees of the Nebraska State Colleges.
The Nebraska State Colleges invite all students, staff, and community members to participate in Denim Day on April 24 by wearing jeans and joining the efforts to educate and prevent sexual violence.
