The Chadron School Board has approved a 50-cent an hour raise for secretaries and classroom paraprofessionals.
The hike puts the starting wage for basic paras at $12.02 per hour, $13.76 for Level II
Special Education paras, $12.27 for secretaries on 10-month contracts, and $12.82 for those on 12-month contracts.
Hourly rates are increased by 25-cents with certification for specialized training, by 50-cents for a 2-year college degree or equivalent, and $1 for a 4-year degree.
School Board President Tom Menke says paras and secretaries fill vital needs and he’s glad the district is able to boost their compensation this year.
The Chadron Public Schools, like nearly all employers in Nebraska today, is struggling to fill all its positions, including paras and secretaries, so Menke hopes the raise makes the jobs more attractive to potential hires.
The pay hike also includes one paid Snow Day per year, if needed, on top of the existing “floating birthday holiday” for those who’ve been with the district over 15 years and an additional day of Christmas break after 20 years.
