City Seeks $1.2 Million In Taxes

Loading

The City of Chadron is seeking just over $1.2 million in tax revenue for the 2023-24 fiscal year, which begins Oct. 1. The levy is yet to be determined while the city awaits its valuation report this month.

The city council reviewed the budget Monday, along with the tax request ordinance. The council will consider both documents twice more before final approval.

The city is asking for tax dollars in the amount of $1,229,038.72 in the current version of the budget.

Expenses in the current version of the budget are estimated at $12,709,018, a 1.17% increase over last year. Projects requested for the next fiscal year include, among others, ramp repair at the airport, a chip seal project for Main Street from Third to 10th, minor repairs at the Chadron Public Library and possible rehabilitation of the courts and playground equipment at Memorial Park.

The council used the first reading to review several corrections to the budget documents from its workshops earlier this summer, including the addition of two grants for the Cowboy Trail Connection in the amounts of $178,540 and $44,635.

“Thanks to the city staff during the budget process. We are in a better position than we were a year ago,” said council member Miles Bannan, adding that department heads and key staff have gained experience since the process last year and made budget preparation more seamless.

  1. Once again more taxes. By the way one cannot pay a debt with debt and get out of debt so tax tax tax is a fools game. The shortage of money is due to the debt based money system. Look at our national debt at usdebtclock.org and see how we are doing as a debtor nation. Debt free money is the true solution we need! Debtfreemoney.org

    • Apparently Tryan doesn’t want police making our communities safer, roads to drive on, schools to teach our children, or a military to protect our country.

      • Yes, threatening peaceful people with violence and a cage is worth the money stolen from us. A society is perfectly capable of having all of those services and not forced to pay taxes.

  2. Where is Robin Hood when we need him? The financially secure individuals are making decisions for those who are just barely hanging on. And they wonder why professionals don’t want to move here.

  3. Robin Hood? I understand and appreciate the point, but this problem will only be solved when we look to our Creator God and to ourselves. “It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.” (Galatians 5:1) Challenge your pastor on that verse, and on the fact that the Bible is the original and ultimate text on economics. And challenge him as to whom and about whom Romans 13 was written. If he teaches the modern standard that includes the wholly ungodly “leaders/authorities” everywhere from the city council to the White House in “the one in authority is God’s servant for your good” (verse 4), run out the door and don’t return, because he is telling you to go against Jesus’ work on the cross, which was to set us free.
Truth should be coming from the pulpit. Tragically, yet prophesied, the so-called “Church” of today is in business to perpetuate our economic problems.

      • It should be unsettling!
Jay wrote that “one cannot pay a debt with a debt and expect to get out of debt.” The city of Chadron is in debt and has to go deeper into debt to fix roads, etc.

        God condemns debt.

        Economists embrace debt.

        Dollars are created as debt.

There is no debt in natural systems. Look hard. Whether you believe you were created unique and special, by God, or you evolved by chance from pond scum, you will not find it.

Natural systems are dynamic and sustainable.

Debt systems are destructive and unsustainable. That truth is clear to us all, if only we would admit it. How much bread can you buy with a dollar, today? How much bread could you buy with a dollar 2 years ago or 20 years ago? Do those answers indicate a dynamic and sustainable system, or economic and societal destruction?

Debt money systems are concepts of man, they follow no natural laws, and, at their core they deprive the people of the liberty for which Jesus died on the cross.

If you enjoy the perennial debates about taxes, debt, repairing roads, and funding police, keep doing what we’re doing. If you have a solution that does not include God’s instruction, I would be interested in hearing it.

  4. The real problem in Chadron that could be fixed is that stop light on the west end of town. But they just keep ignoring this problem. WHY????

  5. Unfortunately, the state of Nebraska makes that call if you are referring to 385/20. The city has made many suggestions, but they have pretty much been ignored.

    • Well, that is typical of the state. They don’t live here so they don’t care. Maybe Chadron could get a little more vocal about this with the state.

  6. Not sure if would work, but, like my mother used to say? “If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again.” I agree that those in the east are totally out of the loop.

  7. Would any everyday worker permit another to take from them? Not a chance, he/she would say to do so would be aiding a thief! Oh but since everyone is being taxed it’s OK. Socialism is hard at work!!

  8. Julius is correct! The Bible is a book of basic instruction how to relate to one another especially on economic matters. Jesus was harsh on those especially who loved money and defrauded others. This earth we are on belongs to God not govt or anyone else. People were given dominion over it as stewards and will be held to account one day!

  9. What ever happened to the economic program that that was put in place years ago. It doesn’t seem like it is working. Chadron is a great community to live in and raise a family but for those who ca afford to move and the tax base does not expand. Looking in from the outside Chadron needs to get aggressive in its business recruitment. Retirees will continue to leave if the tax burdens are not improved. The iceberg is melting and the whole town is going down together if something is not done and soon

  10. City can start with trimming some fat. How many office or shop positions are not necessary? Are the employees being efficient? The way they care or lack of caring for the ball fields while charging $20 a kid is embarrassing. Cutting out the grass between the dugouts and the baseline on the baseball field was a terrible decision. It creates more dirt flying and more mud when it rains. It doesn’t even look like a baseball field. Our streets are damaged a large part because the lack of snow removal. Our city wants to fix the streets themselves but when they do it takes three months per block. While we get taxed and taxed again we don’t even have a skate park, a YMCA or equivalent, really anything for people to do. Our police officers are paid terribly, maintenance worker $17-22 police officer $20-26. That’s not a knock against maintenance workers either. Teachers preach “use your time wisely” in elementary school. Parents preach “spend your money wisely.” Does our city do either?

  11. Why even have an airport? Continually canceling flights or they shuttle bus you from Denver to Chadron. They refuse to refund if you have connecting flight in Denver you end up having to pay to switch to a different flight. It is just a big joke to have this airline here the city either needs to get rid of them.
