Mary Elizabeth (Elk Boy) Black Tail Deer “Ohitika Winyan” (Brave Woman) was born on April 19, 1941 in Pine Ridge, SD to Richard “Dick” Elk Boy Sr and Eliza Holy Bear. Mary made her journey to the Spirit World on Dec 13, 2023 at the Monument Health Hospital in Rapid City, SD.
Mary is survived by her children Gerald (Sherri) of Prairie Island, MN; Joseph, Duane, and Vonda Black Tail Deer, all of Rapid City; Veldon (Frances) of New Town, ND; and Aloysius Black Tail Deer Jr; sister Delia S Conquering Bear; brother Donroy J Elk Boy; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents Eliza Holy Bear and Richard “Dick” Elk Boy; sisters Lula Red Cloud-Burk and Vera Virginia (Elk Boy) Brings Plenty; brothers Carl Elk Boy and Matthew Elk Boy; and stepbrothers Winfred “Sugar Bear” Red Cloud and Doyle “Smiley” Red Cloud.
Pallbearers will be Seth Black Tail Deer, Henry Black Tail Deer, Donroy Janis, Conroy Janis, Darryl Janis, Lillian Black Tail Deer and Moses Black Tail Deer.
Honorary pallbearers will be the Lynda Tombs, Jackie Bell, Chase Family of Newport, Virginia, and All Friends & Relatives – too numerous to mention.
