Local Law Enforcement Overlooking Small Amounts Of Pot At Sturgis Rally

Although last November’s approval by South Dakota voters of recreational marijuana remains on hold under a court challenge, police are unofficially taking that approach to pot during this year’s Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.

Meade County Sheriff Ron Merwin says his deputies are generally looking past enforcing possession of small amounts of marijuana, and the Sturgis police department is apparently taking the same approach, too.

Through the first five days of the Rally, Sturgis police made 15 misdemeanor pot or drug paraphernalia possession arrests compared to 61 last year.
