Unattended Deaths Saturday Claim Philip Curd And Roger Mays

Loading

Two prominent Chadron citizens, 62-year old Philip Curd and 68-year old Roger Mays, suffered unattended deaths at their homes on Saturday with Dawes County Attorney/Coroner Vance Haug ruling out foul play for both.

Curd was the Dawes County Surveyor while Mays was a retired Chadron State College faculty member, former Fort Robinson Post Playhouse artistic director, and current president of the Chadron Library Foundation board.

Haug says Curd was found dead about 10:45 Saturday morning by family members who were checking on him after not being able to reach him by phone.

Based on the initial investigation of the scene by the Dawes County Sheriff’s Office, physical evidence, and witness interviews Haug determined foul play was unlikely but ordered an autopsy to try to determine the exact cause of death.

The investigation is ongoing at this time and Haug asks anyone who believes they may have pertinent information to contact the sheriff’s office.

Haug says Mays was found unresponsive in his home a little before 5:00 PM by family who immediately contacted rescue personnel. He was declared dead at the scene.

Haug and the Chadron Police Department conducted a review of evidence at the scene, interviews of witnesses and medical personnel, and Mays’ medical history before concluding he died of natural causes.
